Plodding: A word that means making slow, steady, and inevitable progress. It implies that while the work might not be flashy or perfect, the consistency guarantees you will get there.
Iterative: This describes a process of repeating a task or action, knowing that each attempt will be slightly imperfect, but building momentum through repetition.
As I sit here finalizing the September scripture journal plan I’m thinking about how this all started nine and a half years ago, and also about how I almost called it quits last month.
In nine and a half years I have not put out a journal plan without some kind of an introduction, until last month. Why? I was just too busy.
The funny thing is, as I get older my life seems to have less and less margin. Although I know I’m the one in charge of that, I’m not sure I’d have it any other way.
My life is full—full of people, full of things I love to do, full of last minute plans, full of household chores and maintenance, full of hobbies, full of a church I love. And this fullness sometimes makes me feel like I’m barely hanging on, barely getting things done in time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not glorifying being busy, I’m celebrating fullness.
With that sense of fullness can also come the feeling of being overwhelmed and that’s what almost led me to throw in the towel. But then I remembered something, it doesn’t always have to be perfect. I also realized that, for me, reading the word with a pencil in hand and a journal open is like peanut butter and jelly or salt and pepper, they just go together.
So here I am, another month, another journal plan, another invitation to sit a little longer in the word and be transformed by its power. Maybe you feel like, or already have, called it quits because you feel like you just can’t keep up, please don’t. Just do it, do it imperfectly, do it when you can, do it even if you’ve missed weeks or months. Just start wherever we are and allow yourself the luxury of imperfection.
I’m adopting a new motto for all of us, “Imperfect is better than not at all!” Look again at the word Plodding above: slow, steady, and inevitable progress! Be encouraged, whether you run or plod, you’re still moving forward!
