Why the Incarnation Matters Today
The gospel and salvation hang on Jesus’ humanity. If Jesus was not fully human, he could not save humanity.

Gratitude - November 2024
As I’m sitting here at my computer, trying to put my thoughts in order regarding this month’s journal plan, I’m realizing it’s not that simple. Historically the month of November is dedicated to practicing gratitude, and I love that tradition. But this November is also a presidential election, and I’m feeling the need to acknowledge that somehow; to acknowledge the anxiety, the anger, the disillusionment that so many people feel right now. It feels right and appropriate to ju

Comfort - October
What brings you comfort? This is a journaling exercise, so go ahead, make a list, write it down! I want you to really think about it. What did you rely on the last time you were upset, sad, frustrated, angry? I turned to __________ for comfort. What comes to my mind when I read the word comfort is my husband, a phone call with my daughter, laughing with my son, a good historical fiction book, knowing my husband and adult children are all home for the night. These things ma

Bearing With One Another
This month’s plan was originally written in 2019 after finishing Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book Life Together . In just a short 122 pages he captures the essence of what it means for us to live life together as the body of Christ, in particular what it means to bear one another’s burdens. In August of 2019 we were all blissfully ignorant of what was to come, but the political name calling and ugly rhetoric was already showing up plenty on all the media outlets and on social med

Christian Charity - August 2024
Christian Charity, I thought I knew what that was until I read an article last week that spoke of how desperately we need it right now. Because it's not so much about what we do with our money but about what we do with our words, our hands, and our heart. Frankly, it's easier to give money away than it is to practice Christian Charity. By definition Christian Charity is "lenient judgement of others. It comes from the Late Latin caritat- caritas: Christian love (Websters). Web

Growing in Christ
Last weekend I was on a women’s retreat (which is part of the reason this is a day late) with 60ish women, many that I’d never met and many that have been friends for close to a decade or more. Before I left I was in the process of putting this plan together so I was already thinking about the topic of growth, but over the weekend I saw what growth in the life of a Christian looks like and it was so encouraging! The bible speaks to the fact that once we come to Christ, our

Anxiety, Worry & Fear
I confess, I’m really hesitant to put this plan out. The last thing in the world I want to do is minimize the pain and desperation involved in fighting anxiety and depression. I also don’t want to add to someone’s already overly full plate of guilt and shame that they can’t seem to get over this even though they believe in Christ. I think we, as the church, still have a long way to go in terms of loving our members who struggle with the dark night of the soul in whatever form

Love & Lent
On Sunday Ron and I are leaving on an extended vacation and so here it is, the end of January and I’ve already been thinking about and planning for Lent. But it’s really not that far away, Ash Wednesday is on Valentine’s Day so we’re only talking about a couple of weeks. But as I was working on the February and March plans I began to feel anticipation at revisiting this centuries old church custom. Last year, because we were journaling the Attributes of God, I didn’t observe
