Congratulations! If you stuck with the May Scripture Journaling Plan you just wrote out the entire book of Ephesians, 155 verses to be exact! I don’t know about you, but I LOVED taking a deep dive into one book. In fact, I loved it so much, I decided to do it again this month. But before we get to that, let me share with you a wonderful little article I found on the web by J.J. Gutierrez. The following are 15 Biblical facts about Ephesians. Some I knew already, many I did not, and quite a few were revealed to me because we took the time to write out each and every verse!
“Ephesians is a go-to book for doctrinal truth, the “how-to” of the Christian walk and encouragement. Most Christians are very familiar with the Book of Ephesians. Many well-known and memorized scriptures come from this letter. Verses like, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8 NIV), “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Eph 3:20 NIV), and “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Eph 4:32 NIV). And we cannot leave out the timeless warfare passage – Armor of God (Eph 6:10-18). But did you know these 15 interesting Bible facts about Ephesians? See if any of them catch you by surprise!
1. Authored by Paul formerly Saul approximately 60-61 AD
2. Written while under house arrest…Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome.
3. One of four Prison Epistles; the other three are Colossians, Philippians and Philemon.
4. Paul wrote Ephesians and Colossians at the same time.
5. Written to the church at Ephesus and to believers everywhere.
6. Focuses on the body of Christ- the church.
7. The central theme is the Glory of the Church.
8. 49th book of the Bible, 10th book of the New Testament, 9th letter of Paul’s 13 letters.
9. Comprised of 6 chapters, 155 verses and 3039 words.
10. Paul uses the phrase “in Christ” as one of his main points.
11. There are “7 ONES” in Ephesians – one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God.
12. Paul writes about the blessings given to Christians: adoption, acceptance, redemption, forgiveness, holy spirit seal, life, grace and citizenship in God.
13. Ephesians can be broken down into three main sections:
1. The WEALTH of the Believer (chapters 1-3)
2. The WALK of the Believer (chapters 4-6:9)
3. The WARFARE of the Believer (chapters 6:10-24)
14.Ephesus was the commercial center of Asia Minor (similar to Hong Kong today).
15.Paul stayed and preached in Ephesus for 3 years…longer than any other single church.”
One other fact I discovered is that the phrase, “in Christ,” or a variation thereof, appears somewhere between 83 to over 200 times in the book of Ephesians, depending on translation. Understanding our union with Christ is an immense topic, maybe a future journal plan!
But, for the month of June I want to continue in Paul’s Epistles by journaling the book of Galatians, all 138 verses of it. Like last month, take your time and dig, read prayerfully and reflectively. If you have the time, try using the S.O.A.P. method. I’ve included a quick how to below.
