My Inspiration... My Mama

I’d like to introduce you to someone very special to me, this is my mom and she’s the person that introduced me to journaling. Growing up there was always a three ring binder with her bible next to her chair where she did her quiet time. She told me she got too distracted trying to pray just sitting there in silence, so she wrote her prayers to God like a letter. When I fully came to Christ in my early twenties I adopted the same practice.

It was talking to God via pencil and paper that gave birth to scripture journaling, which has become an extension of those written prayers. I remember us teasing my mom about the perimeter of her chair. It seemed that her bible, journal, and whatever books she was reading or studies she was doing was ever expanding and so was the space around her chair. Today my chair looks much the same.

Experts say that faith is caught not taught and I believe that’s true. So to all the moms out there with kids still in the house, resist the urge to clean up your quiet time space. Leave it out so they can see how important it is to you. Let them see you returning to your chair throughout the day so they will come to understand that the word is your daily bread and it’s theirs too. Invite them in to “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8)
